Out of interest I thought I’d take a look on Google to see how the old Mindwarp mdbsecure-free-trial-download page was doing in the search results. We tweaked it a couple of months ago and I was interested to see how it might be doing more recently. It’s not doing badly at all. Here are some results for different searches:
“access database security” 12
“ms access database security” 10
“ms access security” 8
“ms database security” 12
“secure ms access databases” 3
“secure access databases” 6
“how to make an access database secure” 6
The new site is doing well for this phrase:
“ms database security” 3
but I didn’t find it in the results for the other phrases.
This sort of indicates the old, tweaked page is pretty good in terms of SERPs, i.e. it’s on page 1 for lots of search terms and with a few more tweaks within the mindwarp site could do even better.

Now that I’ve got a new website for MDBSecure, I’d like to ditch my old site.
Change my pad file and set the new location in the old file.
I can hear you saying already, “you don’t want to do that” you have an existing / established site, with inbound links and is already on a lot of software download sites. Also got several alternative keyword pages.
Or maybe I’m just giving you to much credit 
I do appreciate these points and I’m not 100% sold on the idea of ditching the old site.
I think the idea of promoting the new site with a pad file is a good idea and I think I’ll struggle is I don’t do this.
I guess another idea is to re-brand the product and give it a new name.
Although I think this is a bit of a shame as I like the name.
From a cost point of view I would like to get rid of the old site eventually.
Although I’m not sure how I could add my keyword pages from the old site into the new site without making the new site look unprofessional.
So lots to talk about there and lots of crucial decisions to make for me.

When i setup my first websites, I knew that it was important to use light colours and make the users feel comfortable and not scare them off with nasty colours and horrid text colours or styles.
I then progressed a bit further and realised that those stock site design were a great idea and made your site look professional, I have a site with a smiling business woman at the top and office type images and the name of my web site / company.
Then I discovered it was important to have good content at the top of your page for search engine positioning.
Now, I’ve just thought that the most important thing is to consider that small window area using the most popular screen resolution size aka that first area that a customer will see when they find your site from a search engine.
If this area is full of graphics, your company name and doesn’t give the customer the answer he seeks, without scrolling down, hes probably going to click back and look at the next search engine listing.
So not only do we have to worry about the SEO of our page, but site design, the list is never ending.

Last week I setup a new shop site and copied over my existing product from my old site, as the new site had a better domain name. So I then decided to put some different products on my old site.
So I now have an old site with PR2 on the front page (which is obviously a good start and extremely useful), but I also have several pages which have keyword dense page names, have PR1 etc, which hold no relevance to the products I’m now going to add.
At the moment this “lost pages” just show a link to a missing product. I guess when I add the new products this will show a new / unrelated product.
Is this OK?
is it the best use of such a lost page?
And ideas?

The ideas for the site sound plausible. Give it a go and see how it looks.
Make sure you include enough text for the search engines to pick up and also use good alt text on the cartoon images.

OK, these are my latest ideas.
I’m thinking about having (as you suggest) maybe two columns on the page, on the left with a cartoon of a guy surrounded by books, with a manager stood waiting for him to finish. The guy looks stressed, maybe furious typing at the computer. The text would read you’ll need to read X which will take you 30 minutes. You’ll have to learn read the ms access manual.
Then on the left lots of white space, with a button to buy the program which a cartoon of happy workers and manager relaxing.
I guess I don’t want to get too technical, that was a comment from my old site. But I guess I will have to say something otherwise I’ll not be able to show how difficult it is and why my program is worth it.

If you are short of ideas on approaches to writing a page that sells a product look at competitor sites. Search on Google for competitor sites using your chosen keywords and see how they approach the task of selling their products.
From a quick scan, there don’t seem to be many competing products for sale but there are a lot of sites listing rather complicated manual processes. Perhaps one way to write part of the page would be to summarise the somewhat complicated manual process and then say - why bother, just use our software and make your life easier.

Since I’ve discovered I’ve made a mistake with my first attempt at trying to create a selling page for my keyword heavy domain, I’m finding difficult to come up with a story / selling content for the page.
Obviously convincing people that they need to have security with a domain name which use security isn’t going to convince people. So what could I use instead…
An idea has been proposed that its better than spending time on those long MS Security documents, learning how to do it yourself.
Maybe the story doesn’t have to have a single point, could be a combination of saved costs, saved man power and increased competitiveness. But how to put this into a story. Hmmm…
I do like the idea of having some cartoon pictures in there though.

All things considered I feel my effort / time to develop a product site with a keyword phrase, has to be well spent. So I really need to find out if my choice of keywords is correct before I jump in feet first.
My keywords are MS Access Security.
In my SEO book it says www.wordtracker.com and www.nichebot.com are great free tools, but looking at the sites now, both require payment. The first site, requires you to enter your card details for the 7 day trial, which you can cancel at any time within those 7 days.
Expensive too.
So that was going to be my first step.
Where do I go now with this?
