A new name for my Ideaspad Program?

For over a year now I’ve thought the name 101 Business Notes was a great new name for my Ideaspad program. I plan to release a new version of my program aimed purely at businesses, it will use a MySQL database, i guess I could also provide the option for MS SQL too.

I’ve just done a search on Word Tracker on Business notes and the result was 11, the highest result was for Business Thank You notes at 709.

Gutted.

Anyways, I tried Office Notes instead and this came back with 11 for nothing related to the phrase.

I’m stumped 🙁

A RentACoder (RAC) Testing Request

I’d just like to recommend that you put together a request for testing with RentACoder.com. Initially I got some buttons designed for my app.

Then I got some testing done on my app, quite cheap too.

Always make sure the coders English is good and there feedback is OK. When considering a new coder, they are often willing to jump through hoops just to build up their feedback rating.
I would recommend that you require coders to give you 24 hourly status reports, even to say they have done nothing.

Also, I tend to put the main request up for a small amount of money and say $3 per bug as a bonus payment. So in your request title put “… + $3 Bonus per bug”.
And of course say that “Bugs” are issues that you can reproduce, so they will often have to provide complex instructions of screen dumps.

I would also suggest that you use a document with a table to add all your discussions about bugs. And a column for you to enter completed. That way you and the coder can work on many bugs at once and have discussions about each.

I also say in my request that I will provide regular program updates to the coder.
Coders seem to like this approach as they can earn money for doing very little. For you, you can ensure that you get well tested software.

If you need any advice about your request let me know.

Comments welcome!

Handling Genuine 404 Errors

Since I started tracking missing pages (only recently) I have found that with upgrades to the site, when a lot of duplicate data was removed, I now have lots of genuine 404 errors.

Sure I may have page errors which I haven’t realised yet, but I certainly have pages which don’t corresond to records in the database.

At the moment I log this error and re-direct to the home page.

Obviously if your a user and you click on a link from google your not going to find what your looking for, whether you then use the site search to re-find what your looking for, prossible not.

In my SEO book is says “Page Cannot be found” suicide.

Although it just talks about fixing your site and tools to help find broken urls.

What can i do to help the user…

1. Try and gain the search phrase used if they used a search engine to find the page, then do a site search on that phrase.
2. If theres no search data, try and convert the page name into a search phrase. At the moment all page names have hyphens in them, so I guess I could replace those with spaces. But doing a simple WHERE clause on that, wouldn’t bring back ANY / MANY results, unless it was only one word. I’m guessing that there will be a MYSQL function or feature which will allow me to break up the words and do a search. But do i search on keywords or product name. Hmmm

Counting Numbers to Keep People Interested

You mentioned counting downloads a few days ago. I think this is a very good way of making people come back. I’d consider showing a number of top lists – on different pages, e.g.

On the front page – top 20 downloads this day or week.

On category pages – top 10 or 20 in the category.

On programs – the number this week, number last week. Is it popular, isn’t it popular …

and so on…

Maybe it’s me but I love keeping an eye on download stats.

Can More Searchworthy Categories be Added?

I’m still thinking about possible improvements to SoftTester – I’m finding it hard to switch context! One thing that strikes me is that the categories are all quite PAD file category oriented – which is fine and there’s no need to change. You’ve also got keyword based pages – which is also fine.

But … if you look at the kind of hits you get they are often around certain types of program. By researching keywords I can also see that people look a lot for specific kinds of software to download. These kinds of software don’t line up with the PAD file categories.

Now we’ve introduced the idea of Related Programs based on the top 10 programs using similar keywords, how about adding new top categories? These categories should be linked from all pages as per the existing categories BUT the new category page should contain a list of programs in the new category, i.e. they shouldn’t be nested pages.

The point about the new categories is to get page titles that match what a lot of people are looking for.

I’d be tempted to list these new categories independently on the front page to make them stand out, e.g. in a panel saying Popular Picks or some such. This panel could then be on every page in SoftTester.

From research, here’s what I think an initial set of new categories could be:

free dvd software
free photo editing software
free antivirus software
free screensavers

but there might be more to add in the future.

The page titles would then be along the lines of:

download free dvd software
download free photo editing software
download free antivirus software
download free screensavers

… and the h1 and h2 would follow the lines of the existing category pages.

Remember that the new category pages should probably just list programs and not contain nested subcategories. You may need to limit the list to 50 programs in a category or break the list into multiple pages.

The page titles should make the new pages be in with a chance of getting a fair few hits – if you’re lucky.

Text advertisiments and links

Since the conception of the SoftTester site, I have provided Free text advertising to authors. Primarily to make the site looks well subscribed. At one point I had featured adverts. Two per category.

I’ve since managed to sell some text advertising to a few interested authors.

However, I’ve always felt this part of the site, was more about showing something as I had too much space.

I’d like to use it for something else, however I’m still not exactly sure what.
I guess I could show internal program links and the 45 description.

I think this is the last remaining big issue.

Any thoughts?

SoftTester Offsite Optimisation

So far we’ve made a number of posts about on-page optimisation improvements to try out on SoftTester. We also need to discuss off-page optimisation factors.

I did a check on the number of backlinks to SoftTester. It doesn’t really have that many and a few of them didn’t seem to exist anymore – maybe the sites have expired recently. I think you need to encourage people to link to you more.

At the moment you’ve got an Authors page and a Link To Us page. Perhaps these should be combined so that someone submitting shareware is asked to link back. It’s so long now since I submitted my program that I can’t remember whether users are lead to the link to us page after completing a submission.

The other thing I’d say is look at getting a better looking graphic for people to stick on their websites in order to link back. I’ve always liked the idea of awards – 4 star, 5 star. If the shareware site award graphic is really nice, in the past I’ve placed them on my site for two main purposes:-

  1. It’s a nice, professional graphic I can use for free to make my site better looking!
  2. It’s an award – and then I can say “award-winning software package” in my website copy.

If you look at my site – www.sliqtools.co.uk/invoice-software.aspx – you can see one I really like from Download Pipe. My awards page also includes others that look fairly good. In the end though it comes down to personal preference but a new graphic should only cost $20 or $30 (if you know who to ask) and might make a big difference over time.

Do we need to change the name or description of this blog?

Do we need something more searchworthy?

Making Google’s job easier with Unique Page Titles

On SoftTester you should make the top page titles unique. The home page has not got it’s nice, new “Free Software Downloads …” title but the other pages like Link To Us have also picked up the title. You need to change the title for Link To Us, Contact Us etc. to be relevant to the page. Same goes for the description meta tag, h1 and h2 tags too.

Follow me in nofollowing …

Next thought on optimising Softtester is as follows ….

Are there any top level pages it simply isn’t worth having as landing pages? At first glance, I can think of:

  1. Link to us
  2. Authors
  3. Privacy Policy
  4. Contact Us
  5. Installation Help

They all suck up a bit of PR and don’t hand it back to that many other pages, e.g. the category pages. Perhaps it’s worth considering making links to these pages from everywhere else in Softtester rel=”nofollow”. Alternatively you could use the robots.txt to prevent the pages being indexed.
