Useful SEO Excerpts

- Ideally, a website needs to be constructed from the beginning with SEO in mind. The choice of URLs, domain names and linking strategy between pages all affect the site´s optimisation and should be planned before the website is written.

- If good ranking in SERPs (search engine result pages) is essential to the success of your site…

- … put keyword heavy URLs within my existing sites and make these pages perform well in SERPS. With a good linking strategy within the site, sub-pages will benefit from any link-building I do for my homepage anyway. For example, one of my PR3 sites has 7 PR2 pages even though these have no links from outside the site itself. If I make URLs like product-keyword.html for my sub-pages these will be “liked” by search engines in the same way as domain names with keywords in them.

- When optimising a new website or page, the general advice is to begin with 3 (or possibly 2) phrases to optimise.

- When knitting your chosen phrases into a web page, don´t indulge in keyword stuffing, i.e. packing too many instances of the keyword into each paragraph of text.

- Sometimes you hear that you should aim for a particular keyword density on a page, such as 5%, in order to get the best possible result from search engines. This advice is now considered invalid – just write in a way that the topic is obvious to a human.

- …get backlinks from other sites – and from other pages within your own site – with the link text matching your keywords. You then have the ingredients for a winning formula – your pages think they say something about a specific topic and the rest of the internet agrees.

- There are lots of other factors that may affect how well you do in search results, e.g. how many backlinks you have, how old your domain is and how well optimised your competitors are.

- If you add a rel=”nofollow” tag to a link, the link no longer passes any PR. Google advises people who sell advertising with links to do just this in order to avoid a penalty.

-There are at least 4 factors in selling a product online:-

1. Having a product that has a market in the first place.
2. Determining what people search for (on Google, Yahoo etc.) when looking for such a product.
3. Making sure your website is a good match for the most frequent search terms – plus long tail terms.
4. Making your website convince customers to buy your product

-The other thing to remember is that Google Pagerank isn´t everything. Pagerank doesn´t guarantee a page gets visitors. Monitor your web stats and see if any changes produce a rise in the number of visitors. Make refinements and see what effect they have.

- I´m afraid I take quite a simplistic view of Google Analytics and simply look at the rise and fall in the previous 30 days of:

visitors/ day
unique visitors/ day
bounce rate

- I think that all you can do is attack each site bit by bit – titles, h1, h2, content, refining step by step. You´ve got about 4 or 5 months before Google takes a new site seriously so there´s no mad rush.

The other alternative is to pay someone to do the work for you. This can be expensive though as I´ve found out myself. As always, time costs.

There´s no reason to be downhearted, just do it bit by bit.

Traffic sources – google, yahoo, live, msn etc.

- In a comment on an earlier post there was a question about getting inbound links. Well, getting links to a website is one of the most time-consuming and difficult activities when first trying to make a site rank well in SERPs. Although web directories are not as useful in this regard as they were a few years ago, they can still be a good way of getting backlinks. I´ve come across websites that have a PR of 3 and don´t appear to have backlinks from anything other than web directories.

- This is quite specific to my site, but I thought it was an interesting comment. I wouldn´t plan to transfer any of the old stuff across. The old pages seem to do OK in terms of SERPs where they are – they just aren´t converting to sales – so I´d do new ones on the new site if needed.
